Tempus Public Foundation as coordinator, Mindentudás Egyeteme Tudományos Kht., Eötvös Loránd University, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and Széchenyi István University, Gyor as participants undertake the organisation of the Hungarian Researchers' Night. The event is part of a pan-European initiative which takes place all over the continent on 22 September, 2006.The Europe-wide festival series aims at emphasizing that researchers live 'among us'. The Hungarian event will focus on science and researchers' career specifically in the fields of natural sciences and environment protection. We aim to raise a deeper awareness in environment protection issues as well as to bring science and scientists closer to the society by presenting science in a user-friendly way and providing easy access to the 'habitat' of science.To obtain our objectives we wish to involve the public in a wide range of various activities. These include hands-on experiments at different HEI sites; scientific lectures and demonstrations; laboratory and cave visits; geophysical experimentation and astronomical observation on the Danube; the challenge of an on-line quiz series; creative competitions for students; inventions of very young scientists; exhibitions of 'green' organisations; researchers' show and a researchers' pub The professional background of each organiser (a national bureau for EU grants, a science media actor, 3 HEIs) ensures that the activities will be efficiently co-ordinated and both the 'serious' and 'fun' activities will display a high standard of quality. We foresee that though the activities will take place in Budapest and Gyor the outreach of the event will be way wider as via the Internet and the television most of Hungary will be covered.We expect an increased interest in environmental issues, science, science career and research work that is to be placed 'within the reach' of children and adults with a special focus on women.
