Final Activity Report Summary - SC-SPORT-EX (Sport and social capital in the European Union)
A major aim of this research was to illuminate synergies and opportunities for intra- and inter-organisational, as well as international and interdisciplinary dialogues on sport governance and social capital in the European Union. This project achieved two levels of impact. At the European level, the findings now feed into debates around the role of the sport governance within Member States and the European Union. This relates not only to political discussion, but also to practical policy development around the relationships between sport governing bodies (SGBs) and European citizens. Based on intensive ethnographic multi-sited fieldwork on the governance of sport in our four case study countries (the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, and France) and across three sports (handball, sailing, and amateur football) the results of the project provide much-needed evidence for understanding how SGBs (all non-profit organisations) communicate with their constituents, particularly highlighting possible problems, solutions, and methods for measuring the social capital generated by these organisations. We conclude that social capital is in fact an essential mechanism for the delivery of services by sport governing bodies and in the implementation of sport policy.

The Declaration on Sport (1997 Amsterdam Treaty) asked the EU to listen to sports associations when important questions affecting sport are raised. European citizens view sport-governing bodies (SGBs) as essential to European life, and encourage understanding and cooperation between SGBs and the EC. However, little is known about relations between SGBs and their members.This research will: explore the organisational structures of SGBs and the nature of their relationships with their membership at local, regional and national levels; assess which variations are attributable to local cultural differences; assess the impact of SGB association networks on social capital at the local, national, and European levels; assess the involvement of women in these networks, particularly in decision-making capacities; assess practices for dispute resolution; and, highlight the ways in which European policy can most effectively support SGBs and the European citizens they represent. Bocconi University, Milan, will host the research Team.The project will use four case studies (Italy, Denmark, the Czech Republic, and France) to compare the social capital generated by SGB decision-making and membership networks. The primary methods for this research will be semi-structured interviews and multi-sited organisational ethnographies. The multi-national and interdisciplinary Team will promote researcher mobility and academic exchange.The audiences for this research are policymakers, SGBs, and the academic community. Initial dissemination of findings will focus on policymakers and associations, providing short reports, workshops, and conferences to facilitate understanding.Journal articles and a co-authored monograph in later stages will share findings to an academic audience. As such this research will illuminate synergies and opportunities for intra- and inter-organisational, as well as international and interdisciplinary dialogues on sport and social capital in the European Union.
