Final Activity Report Summary - SICON (Stability, Identification and COntrol in Nonlinear structural dynamics)
The research on nonlinear structural dynamics has experienced break-through developments in the last decades both in the theoretical and applied fields. This is the result of extraordinary research efforts undertaken by several leading international research groups ranging from applied mathematics to physics and engineering with different specialisations. The SICON project was structured in a series of training courses and one international conference. In particular, the topics addressed can be summarized in the following titles of the training courses: (i) Stability and bifurcations of nonlinear dynamical systems, (ii) Advanced nonlinear dynamics and chaotic dynamical systems, (iii) Nonlinear dynamics and control of structural and mechanical systems, (iv) Vibration testing, Identification of linear and nonlinear systems, (v) Experimental dynamics, model identification and damage detection. Large effort was devoted by the organisers in structuring all the events and in organizing them in a coherent series with a precise selection of both the topics and the speakers. The scientific success of the events has been possible for the high level of the keynote speakers, for the consistent program and finally for the constant attendance of the early-stage career researchers throughout the project.

The research on non-linear structural dynamics has experienced breakthrough developments in the last decades, both in the theoretical and applied fields. This is the result of extraordinary efforts undertaken by several leading international research groups, ranging from applied mathematics to physics and engineering. The impact on the technological applications has been growing concurrently with the fundamental research, and the industry has started to drive serious attention towards these new and emerging design paradigms. In numerous cases, the generated refined knowledge of the non-linear phenomena has enhanced the design and the production leading to sustainable engineering products and processes. Nevertheless, differently from the established academic trends in the USA, in Europe less attention is being placed towards coordinated teaching programs addressing non-linear dynamics disciplines.However, several leading European research groups, in some cases strongly interacting, are currently undertaking successful and internationally recognized efforts tailored to fundamental and applied findings in non-linear dynamics. This has determined a unique opportunity for transferring the most advanced knowledge achieved by the senior researchers to young fellows in the early stages of their career.The present proposal is structured in a series of training courses and international conferences. In particular, the topics addressed are:(i) stability and bifurcations of non-linear dynamical systems;(ii) advanced non-linear dynamics and chaotic dynamical systems;(iii) vibration testing, identification of linear and non-linear systems;(iv) non-linear dynamics and control of structural and mechanical systems;(v) model identification and damage detection.The courses and conferences are conceived to take place within a period of three years in different Member States. Each event will focus the attention on a specific topic; overall, they are mutually well related and coordinated.
