Накратко на български

Звездите в близост до Слънцето се анализират, за да се разбере дали излъчването им в рентгенови лъчи идва от млади звезди или от двойни звездни системи. Това помага за уточняване на моделите за формирането и еволюцията на галактиките.

Final Activity Report Summary - ORION (The Young Stellar Population in the Solar Neighbourhood)

The main goal of the project involved in this ERG was the determination of the properties of the stars in the solar neighbourhood. In particular, the researcher intended to distinguish between the two scenarios proposed for the excess of stars observed in shallow X-ray surveys by different authors in the past: that the excess comes from a young stellar population coming from nearby star-forming regions that were active in the past, or binary (X-ray emitting) stars not accounted for by the typical models of star formation and galactic evolution. This work was begun by the researcher during his two-year contract under the Marie Curie Action (Transfr of Knowledge) at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Palermo, and finished during the past months. The study required a large number of observations from large telescopes on the stellar sample of the Bright Serendipitous Sample (BSS: a sample from a survey of X-ray sources, galaxies and stars, with high levels of X-ray flux using the European mission XMM-Newton). The first results of the work indicate that there are noticeable large numbers of young stars in the sample. Thus, the first scenario seems to be more plausible. Taking this result into account, the researcher began a study on the X-ray properties of young stellar associations and moving groups in the solar vicinity that has concluded with the publication of a new paper (recently accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics). The results of this study will be used in an immediate future to constraint the properties of the BSS stellar sample to clearly distinguish between the two scenarios proposed.

Цел на проекта

The aim of the project is to determine the physical and statistical characteristics of the young stellar population of the Solar Neighbourhood in terms of magnetic activity, and the total number of young stars in our vicinity.Ultimately, the results will establish the base for a complete study of the conditions necessary for the evolution of planetary atmospheres and the development of life. In recent years, a series of young stellar kinematic groups (clusters, associations and moving groups) of cool stars with similar space motion and with ages ranging from 8 million years to 50 million years, has been discovered in the Solar neighbourhood. These associations of very young stars are excellent laboratories for investigations of forming planetary systems, and for the study of the influence of stellar high energy radiation on the planetary atmospheres, since young cool stars are high X-ray emitters. However, a statistical approach is needed for having a complete view of the problem: the knowledge of the total number of young (active) stars and their physical properties is needed to understand the process of formation of planets and their evolution, in a wide range of scenarios. The scientific output of this project will have an impact on a wide context: on the studies of the stellar formation history in the Solar Neighbourhood, of forming planetary systems, of the conditions and evolution of exo-planets, and of the effects of high energy radiation on the evolution of their atmospheres and the development of life.
