Final Activity Report Summary - MAXLAS (Emerging X-ray science and technology: combining laser and accelerator physics)

The project was to train a number of fellows in their early stage of their career both in laser and accelerator physics. It was organised around six tasks: 1) seeding a linear accelerator-based free electron laser with a femtosecond laser and its harmonics; 2) ultrashort pulse metrology; application to attosecond science and to the measurement of ultrashort FEL pulses; 3) particle acceleration using high power lasers and feasibility studies of combining laser-accelerators and conventional accelerators; 4) time-resolved X-ray diffraction; 5) ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy for molecular structural dynamics; 6) XUV optics and optical diagnostics for the future XUV sources. Progress was achieved in all of these tasks. 14 fellows were trained in combined laser and accelerator technologies, among them, six are PhD students. One has defended his thesis while five will do that in 2010 or 2011. The project has been extremely useful in establishing contacts and collaborations between the Atomic Physics Division at the Physics Department, the Chemical Physics division at the Chemical Center, and the synchrotron facility MAX-lab.

Цел на проекта

We propose to establish a Marie Curie Early Stage Training site (MAXLAS) on the subject: Emerging X-ray Science and Technology: Combining Laser and Accelerator Physics". This site, located at the Lund University, brings together the Lund Laser Centre and the MAX-lab synchrotron radiation facility. The future development of bright, ultra-short and coherent light sources working in the extreme ultraviolet and X-ray domains will imply a profound synergy between the laser and accelerator community, for the source development, the implementation of new diagnostics, novel instrumentation, and future applications. Combining the LLC and MAX-lab resources and competence, we will give to the young European scientists, expertise in combined laser and accelerator physics so that they will become the future builders and knowledgeable users of the coming intense short-pulse X-ray sources. The Early Stage Researchers will have access to two state-of-the-art facilities, both members of integrated initiatives of infrastructures, providing a stimulating environment in research. We will provide over four years 24 person-year training in combined laser and accelerator physics, allowing six young researchers to graduate as PhDs from Lund University and eight early stage researchers to be trained during a six month/one year period. Training will be offered in a variety of leading-edge research projects, such as seeding a linear accelerator-based free electron laser with a femtosecond laser and its harmonics, ultra-short pulse metrology with application to femtosecond and attosecond science, laser-based particle acceleration, time-resolved X-ray diffraction, ultra-fast X-ray absorption spectroscopy and novel XUV optics and optical diagnostics. The ESR will be even trained in general scientific skills such as high vacuum, electronics, radio-frequency technology, programming, X-ray detectors, lasers and in general personal skills such as management, communication and educational skills."
