Final Activity Report Summary - MODUL (Molecular Diagnostics Using Lab-on-a-Chip)

Over the course of the project a continuous transfer of knowledge was assured via active participation of the Fellows in weekly project meetings at Philips Research. By making sure that the research performed by Joakim Isaksson and Bart van Meerbergen is in line with these projects, there was a constant exchange of knowledge on application-related demands and challenges, as well as feedback on recent results. Unfortunately no suitable candidate was found for the 3rd research position of the contract. Joakim Isaksson and Bart van Meerbergen drove their own research challenges (coupled to MODUL) within the projects and thereby took responsibility in achieving the milestones together with their colleagues. Several shorter activity reports on research progress in the respective projects were produced to ensure that the work was properly aligned with other team members. Joakim Isaksson and Bart van Meerbergen networked within and outside Philips developed considerably during the project and when they applied for permanent positions at Philips they had a track record within the company. This project was very successful and has resulted in many publications and patent applications. It is expected that these patent applications which will prove to be advantageous for Philips in the future. The value of these fellows for the Philips organisation is clearly embodied in the fact that both have received a permanent contract after the termination of their MODUL contracts.

Цел на проекта

Recent developments make it increasingly clear that the majority of life-threatening diseases have a relation with genetic effects. Early detection of these diseases greatly improves the therapeutic success rate, leading to a prolongation of the healthy and productive lifespan of the individual. The aim of the MODUL project is to develop the low-cost diagnostic devices that are indispensable for the large-scale introduction of molecular diagnostics based on genetic identification and expression profiling. A lab-on-a-chip platform is a generic term for any miniaturised integrated device that performs the many steps of a molecular diagnostic assay automatically. The advantages are a large efficiency saving, much lower volumes of costly biological reagents and the possibility of doing many analyses in parallel at relatively low cost. Philips Research has expert knowledge in designing and constructing modalities based on electronic technologies but has insufficient in-depth knowledge of biochemical processes and protocols, biophysics and clinical laboratory tests. In this proposal we request a Marie Curie grant to employ three scientific fellows with biochemistry and biophysics experience. It is the intention that the candidates transfer their biochemistry and biophysics knowledge to Philips staff and in return build up electronics/device expertise. The fellows will work on various aspects of the lab-on-chip platform and extract the maximum value for Europe from the promising overlap region between integrated devices and molecular diagnostics.
