Final Activity Report Summary - MALPARTRAINING (The challenge of malaria in the post genomic era)

The main expected result of 'The challenge of malaria in the post genomic era' (MALPARTRAINING) Marie Curie EST action was to produce mobile researchers on infectious diseases, more particularly in the field of Malaria, a disease caused by a highly evolved protozoal pathogen. This programme was a concerted action from well-recognised scientists from the Network of Excellence Biology and Pathology of the Malaria Parasite (BioMalPar) and was established in close contact with BioMalPar Graduate Programme and EMBL.

Цел на проекта

The genomes of the malaria parasite and its hosts have been recently completed. This programme is designed to meet the challenge of how best to exploit this information to attain a thorough understanding of the biology of the parasite and the interaction between the parasite and its hosts. The innovative exploitation of post genomic tools will advance the quest for new methods to control parasite proliferation, the pathophysiology of the disease and, possibly, the mosquito vector, providing new clinical applications and benefiting public health.The MalParTraining EST programme proposes to create by education and training a cadre of young, highly professional, creative and broad-minded thinkers through collaborative projects. They will acquire a wide range of research skills in areas ranging from bioinformatics and molecular biology through biophysics, protein biochemistry, cell biology and immunology. The research programme is the result of collaborations between leading groups of malaria research in major European institutions, most of them being currently engaged in the European Network of Excellence Biology and Pathology of the Malaria Parasite". First class advanced training through courses, workshops and annual meetings will provide the fellows with an unrivalled start to their future careers.The consortium aims to promote the exchange of ideas, cutting edge technologies, skills and concepts, developing a shared vision, a sense of identity and "lan" in the new and emerging Europe of malaria research. The programme will be dynamic, and will also promote the training and education of a new generation of scientists from malaria endemic areas, equipping them to establish high quality malaria research programmes in their own countries. Its ultimate goal is to establish a durable integration of Europe at the forefront of international malaria biology research."
