Накратко на български

3D геометричното моделиране изследва математическите методи за очертаване на обекти, като например човешката физиология. Тези разработки помагат за по-доброто разбиране на вълновите явления и подобряват индустриалните приложения на геометрията.

Educational, scientific, and technological aspects of splines

The ESTSPLINE grant contributed to three different sets of activities related to Dr Ewald Quak's scientific research field of 3D geometric modelling: 1. development of the Laboratory of Wave Engineering (please see http://wavelab.ioc.ee online) as a new part of the Center for Nonlinear Studies (CENS, please see http://cens.ioc.ee online) within the Institute of Cybernetics (IoC, please see http://www.ioc.ee online) at Tallinn University of Technology (TUT, please see http://www.ttu.ee online) in Estonia; 2. investigations of industrial applications of 3D geometry and road maps for future research in this subject area; 3. initialisation of a 3D scientific visualisation capacity within CENS. Apart from publishing articles in scientific journals, Dr Quak was the editor (with T. Soomere) of the edited volume 'Applied wave mathematics - Selected topics in solids, fluids, and mathematical methods', published by Springer, containing 12 tutorials to highlight the importance of applied mathematics in the studies of wave phenomena. He was also guest editor for the special issue '3D physiological human' of the journal The Visual Computer, together with Prof. Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann (University of Geneva, Switzerland). 1. The Laboratory of Wave Engineering was formally established as a new research unit in January 2009. The team focuses on complex and nonlinear phenomena in wave dynamics and coastal engineering, and the applications of mathematical methods in wave studies. The team is led by Prof. Tarmo Soomere, a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, with Dr Quak as senior researcher. As of June 2011, it has 17 members. National and international research grants are vital for the development of the team. The currently most significant is BalticWay (the potential of currents for environmental management of the Baltic Sea maritime industry), for which Dr Quak is a member of the organising team and serves as dissemination manager, and which is coordinated by Prof. Soomere (please see http://wavelab.ioc.ee/bonus-balticway online). The main part of the ESTSPLINE grant was used to establish and run a secretariat for the laboratory, paying two administrative / research assistants: Anna Terentjeva and Katri Kartau. The importance of guaranteeing a well-functioning administrative nucleus for the inception and initial development of the laboratory simply cannot be overerestimated. It is also important to note that the assistants' duties also included research contributions. 2. In 2010, Dr Quak became a member of the editorial board of the newly established Journal of Mathematics in Industry, a peer-reviewed, open access journal that focuses on new developments in mathematics for industrial applications. Since 2003, Dr Ewald Quak has been co-organising annual workshops on industrial challenges in geometric modelling, computer aided design, and simulation, the most recent ones partially sponsored by ESTSPLINE, promoting the cooperation of industry and academia in addressing relevant and challenging mathematical problems from geometry, computer-aided design, shape modelling, and simulation. For the Geometric Design Activity Group of SIAM (please see http://www.siam.org/activity/gd/ online), Dr Quak organised forward looking sessions and moderated plenary panel discussions at the group's biennial conferences on geometric design in 2007, 2009, and 2011, partially supported by ESTSPLINE. The goal is to have experts suggest topics for future research, which are scientifically challenging and of practical industrial relevance. 3. The concept of a 3D visualisation system was developed jointly by Dr Ewald Quak and Dr Heiko Herrmann and partially funded by their re-integration grants ESTSPLINE and ESTWAVE. The aim was to establish a 3D visualisation system for scientific data at CENS, which has not existed there before. Цел на проекта

Having completed a two-year senior researcher fellowship as part of the Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge (ToK) project CENS-CMA, the proposing researcher, Dr. Ewald Quak, has elected to stay at the fellowship host institution CENS and pursue his further career while located in Estonia. The ToK project CENS-CMA (Collaboration of Estonian and Norwegian Scientific Centres within Mathematics and its Applications) joins the Estonian National Centre of Excellence CENS (Centre for Nonlinear Studies) and the Norwegian National Centre of Excellence CMA (Centre of Mathematics for Applications). The still-ongoing CENS-CMA project is a collaborative effort concerning research in computational mathematics, but also in training and public outreach activities. Though no longer financed by that project, Dr. Quak will continue to serve as an important link between the two centres and contribute to their activities, being familiar with CENS now (as a member of CENS since May 2005) and having worked for the Norwegian non-profit applied research organization SINTEF since 1996, and a member of CMA since its inception in 2003. Dr. Quak's research in the use of spline functions as tools in computational mathematics will cover various aspects: new scientific work in the stability and use of spline wavelets as part of a multiresolution analysis; technological applications concerning water waves, especially in a newly defined CENS activity called ""Green Marine Highways"" to reduce the damage caused by oil pollution in the Baltic Sea; educational initiatives such as publishing books on related topics, developing coursework, also in the framework of the European Consortium of Mathematics for Industry, and continuing to organize joint industry-academia workshops and other events to stimulate intersectorial contact.""
