Modelling of electromagnetic transients and PLC energy services

The first year of the project (from 1 October 2010 - 20 September 2011) was focused on the realisation of the work packages (WPs) 1 - 3 given in the Part B.4: Implementation of the project description. The research work started with WP1 and was focused on systematisation of the up to date knowledge on EMC modelling of the sources of electromagnetic transients and mathematical methods for analysis of thin-wire conductors in presence of different media. Two modelling methods have been analysed in more details - transmission line model and full-wave theory model. Special attention was done on the survey of the scientific literature related to modelling of power line wire conductors in presence of different media. WP2 was focused in developing of a mathematical model and computer programs based on the full-wave theory for frequency analysis of thin-wire conductors in presence of different media. The developed mathematical model was done on the basis of antenna theory. Special attention was done on development of simplified quasi-static methods for approximate numerical solution of Sommerfeld-type integrals. The WP3 was focused on preparation activities and realisation of simulation studies based on comparison, validation, selection and classification of the theoretical and numerical results by using different mathematical models and software tools. In the second year (1 October 2011 - 30 September 2012) the research activities were towards realisation of the WPs 4 - 7. The main objectives during this second phase were focused on dissemination of the project results in front of wider scientific public through participation in scientific events and publishing. In more detail, the activities within the WP4 were dedicated to the investigation of the applicability of power line communications by analysing and modelling of power lines at high frequencies. WP5 considered activities on establishing collaboration and contacts with researchers and research groups that work in the same field of interest, mostly on scientific events. It is important to stress that EMC group was established close collaboration with prof. Farhad Rachidi from the Laboratory for EMC at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. In the frame of this collaboration Dr Arnautovski-Tosheva has realised a short visit to the EMC Laboratory at EPFL where she got knowledge about their participation in the 'Open PLC European Research Alliance' (OPERA) project. The two horizontal phases WP6 and WP7 were realised with various levels of intensity through the first and the second year of the project. WP6 (Dissemination of the project results) has started practically from the second trimester of the first year and has continued with high intensity during all second year. The activities of the WP7 (Overall management and summation of the activities) were undertaken in parallel to realisation of WP1 to WP6 practically during all 24 months.

Цел на проекта

Power Line Communication (PLC) technology enables broadband data transfer through power lines. Although promising it is still not fully developed and standardized. One major concern is the EMC radiation problem that is still controversial. However, it seems that experimental or commercial deployments are working practically without complaints. PLC channel is a power transmission line (TL) itself. It may be subject to unwanted disturbances and failures caused by electromagnetic (EM) transients of lightning and switching surges. TL operation in transient mode is important to study in order to understand how power lines can be used to store and realize energy. The protection against EM transients is especially difficult because of its unpredictability and the complexity of their interaction with the electrical system. Although impressive progress has been made the investigation of EM transients continues by perfecting the theories of its generation and propagation, modelling and improving the techniques of protection. However, there is still a lack of systematic knowledge that validates different models’ capability. Consequently, an important research is expected within summarizing transient effects and development of diagnostic tools for predicting and detections of transient effects and possible failures in the power system. This coincides with a new and challenging idea for use of PLC within network quality and management applications. Power service could benefit from PLC to increase its operating efficiency and quality of the power energy supply. Moreover, it would be just one fragment among future add-on services of an “intelligent” power network that PLC can offer. Thus, the objective of the proposed Project is actually twofold: to summarize up to date knowledge about modelling EM transients involving transmission line and antenna approach; and to investigate the possibilities of PLC technology in detection of possible failures caused by transients.
